Background:

Jan Walters has been a nurse since 1971. She has been an Adult Nurse Practitioner for the past 12 years working in cardiology practices located in Arizona and Michigan. Other experiences include being the Cardiac Recovery Director at home care agency in Troy, Michigan and a case manager for University of Michigan Medical Center Thoracic/Cardiac Surgery Nursing Department. She worked in the University of Michigan Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit for 19 years. She has developed patient written and video education materials. Currently, she manages the Coumadin, Congestive Heart Failure and Lipid Clinics at the Heart and Vascular Center of Arizona.

She was a Panel Member for the National Guidelines for the Care of the Cardiac Patient at Home. She has published multiple articles and lectured at national conferences. Master's thesis researched the Influence of Early Discharge on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patient Outcomes. This thesis included an assessment tool to grade sternal and leg incision status and discharge criteria for CABG patients.  She developed critical pathways for the cardiac/thoracic surgery and care of cardiac patients in the home.  The critical pathways decreased the cost and length of hospital stay.
